Laser precipitation monitor (Disdrometer)
from Thies Clima

The highly accurate, state-of-the-art Laser Precipitation Monitor (LPM) measures the amount, intensity and type of precipitation (ie drizzle, rain, hail etc) down to particles as small as 0.16 mm in diameter providing a useful tool for accumulating detailed precipitation data.

This precipitation monitor is used around the world for a variety of applications. One such is the PACDEX study (see below for more information).

Project: PACific Dust Experiment (PACDEX)

Location: North America

PACDEX studies the long range transport of dust and anthropogenic aerosols from Eurasia, across the Pacific Ocean, into North America.

As part of the ground based instruments the LPM is deployed at the California Mountain Site
