Aerosol Generator SDAG
Biral is developing innovative particle generating
technology for pharmaceutical formulation and production of inhaled drugs.
Pulmonary drug delivery is one of the fastest growing
markets in the pharmaceutical industry. Recently, there has been increased interest in
using the lung as a route for delivering systemic drugs. Certainly, it is an attractive
alternative to delivery by injection for new biotechnology macromolecules.
Close control of particle size during production is
essential for effective targeting of the right area of the lung. Too large a particle
impacts the back of the throat; too small a particle gets exhaled. Typically, production
involves conventional milling followed by a micronising process (fluid-energy milling).
Unfortunately, this technique creates very broad particle size distributions. In fact
particles may need selection to arrive at the correct narrow distribution - inherently
wasteful of perhaps a very expensive drug.
Biral has developed a new technology, fundamentally
extremely stable and capable of fine process-control. Indeed, it generates accurate
micron-sized particles with a size distribution less than +/- 10%. Additionally, the
technique is compatible with mass production.
We are now searching for potential strategic partners to
develop this exciting technology from the initial prototypes into a product. If you are
