Introduction This is intended as a summary of site requirements for initial delivery and installation of the SODAR system to ensure that no unexpected problems occur and data collection can be commenced as soon as possible. You may also wish to incorporate relevant sections into a check list when moving the SODAR between sites as necessary.
Delivery Access (applies if trailer option is not taken) Delivery will be made by a dedicated vehicle typical of the 7.5 tonne class. The vehicle will be equipped with a tail lift and manual handling trucks suitable for operation on paved surfaces. Paved roads suitable for use by a 7.5 tonne vehicle must be present to within 100m of the operating site.
Site Foundations The SODAR RASS require an area of 8 m by 5 m for installation. The equipment may be deployed on paved or grassed areas. If the area of deployment is to be grass the soil must be firm and free from water logging. If the area is to be paved facilities for the attachment of guy wires must be provided. The site must be level to within 0.1 m across the area required by the equipment. The site must not contain holes or mounds or greater than 0.05 m depth or height across the area required by the equipment. Additional Site Requirements For optimal operation the SODAR RASS requires that local noise sources and reflecting surfaces are kept to minimum. The ambient noise level should be below 50 dB(A). There should be no sources of excessive of continuous noise, at least at the frequency of operation of the SODAR such as roads, factories or an airfield. The site must be free from inhomogeneties in the measuring volume from sources such as factory smoke or cooling stack plumes or orographic wind flows. The site must be free from structures that may cause reflection that have an elevation of greater than 15° from the base of the antenna. No source of electromagnetic radiation shall be present with a frequency that is within ± 10 MHz of the RASS transmission frequency. Site Service Requirements (for mains powered systems) The only service requirement is the electrical supply. An electrical power socket outlet conforming to BS4343 (IEC-EN60309-2) type 2P-E 230 V shall be required within 15 m of the centre of the site. The supply shall conform to national standards expected of a normal mains supply within the country and shall be capable of supplying not less than 16 Amperes. It is recommended that the socket outlet incorporates local fusing and switching. Connectors suitable for other power sockets can be supplied if detailed at time of order. Health & Safety Access Restrictions In operation the SODAR / RASS emits both sound and electromagnetic radiation that may be harmful to people in the immediate vicinity of the transmitters. It is the responsibility of the customer to ensure access restriction measures and suitable warning notices are deployed such that no person may approach within 10 m of the equipment when it is operational. Equipment Licensing Requirements It shall be responsibility of the customer to obtain any and all licences, permits and permissions relating to the use of the RASS extension of the SODAR. Control Cabin In the event that the equipment selected includes the standard computer for use indoors a control cabin or other suitable enclosure must be provided by the customer to house the computer and any operator. The cabin shall be fitted with a waterproof duct or gland of not less than 100 mm diameter for cable access. The cabin must be located within 50 m of the antenna installation and be provided with a 230 VAC mains supply terminated with at least two standard mains sockets. The cabin shall be fitted with environmental control equipment such that the temperature and humidity remain within the following ranges 5° to 40° C and 5% to 85% RH. Any air-conditioning equipment should be mounted on a wall facing away from the system. In the case that the outdoor control housing for electronics option is selected the control cabin is not required. Optional Equipment and Services The customer may wish to make a telephone line available either at the control cabin or at the antenna site, in case of fully outdoor option, for remote interrogation of the system. Please note: A GSM modem can be provided with the equipment at extra cost if a fixed telephone line is not available.
