SODARs manufactured by Metek

The SODAR outdoor acoustic antenna unit is made from weatherproof closed cell foam panel with either a 16, 24 or 64 element antenna array (loudspeakers) depending on the model.

The elements are watertight loudspeakers with exponential horns for impedance matching (Ø 13 cm each for the PCS-16 and PCS-24 and 13.5 cm for the PCS64). Maximum power for each loudspeaker is 20 W (10 W avg) for PCS-16 and 10 W for PCS-24 and 64.

Optional  automatically controlled antenna heating  is 230 VAC, 300 W maximum.

Surrounding acoustic shield

The pyramedic shaped acoustic shield is made from weatherproof closed-cell foam panels lined with UV-resistant sound absorbing foam which needs to be renewed every 5 - 10 years depending on the site condition. The absorption ratio within frequency range of 1000 - 2500 Hz is better than 90 % and the acoustic beam width is ± 7° (depending on frequency).

The acoustic shield is easily assembled on site as shown in the examples of the PCS-24 below.

PCS-16 comes with 4 basic panels (similar to the partially assembled unit above in the image with red border). The upper 4 panels and 4 triangular thnadners are optional for the PCS-16.
