PIBBDT =
Portable Integrated Battlespace Biological Detection Technology

    Biral wins PIBBDT

to lead a consortium of UK
    experts to develop a new
    biodetector   . . .

In spite of the heavyweight title this is a project to develop a small, highly automated specific identifier for biological weapons.

Biral is very pleased to be leading the consortium that has been selected by the UK MoD to develop a new biodetector that will represent a quantum step in the technology available to the military. The current system is highly effective but requires a specialised vehicle, a dedicated supply chain and a skilled military crew to run it. The objectives for the new system are that it should be easily transportable with small non-specialist vehicles and should require only occasional attendance by maintenance crews for very simple procedures.

The cutting-edge technology will be based partly on research carried out at Dstl, Porton Down and partly on independent research carried out by members of the consortium. The use of novel micro-engineering techniques together with detectors based on optical microchips will enable a very compact system to be built. Advanced systems engineering techniques will be employed to ensure that the instrument operates as a fully integrated unit with very high reliability.

New Aerosol Fluorescence Sensor

 now available

Biral has developed an Aerosol Fluorescence Sensor (AFS) that continuously measures the fluorescence response from a volume of aerosol in two specific spectral bands.

The AFS has been designed either as a stand-alone instrument or as an attachment to the Aspect aerosol analyser (which measures aerosol particle size, shape and number concentration). The AFS can also be fitted with an aerosol concentrator for use when the target is dilute.

VeroTect biodetector

 for characterisation of interferents

The VeroTect biodetector will be used to measure the characterization of size, shape and the fluorescence level of interferents such as pollen, fungi and bioaerosol stimulants.

This work will be carried out by the Polish Military University of Technology, which conducts scientific research in the area of environmental protection, aerosols and biodetection.
