The Biral ASPECT measures aerosol size and shape data for Tata Steel Europe and the University of Sheffield.

Tata Steel Europe's Research and Development Centre at Moorgate in Rotherham, UK, have an ongoing project with the University of Sheffield to characterise particulate matter in the air around their UK manufacturing sites.

A poster based on the work so far, with the Biral Aspect and a Rotating Drum Sampler at the Health and Safety Laboratories, won a prize at the recent Royal Society of Chemistry Young Members' Symposium. It was presented by the Society of Chemical Industry, who are interested in the collaboration between the University of Sheffield and industry and commented on being impressed by the use of the Biral Aspect in this new application.

To read the abstract from the poster session please click "Development of a novel experimental design for the characterisation of particulate matter from the iron and steel making process".

Review of the International Aerosol Conference 2010 in Helsinki

With more than 1300 delegates this IAC was easily the largest to date. This is hugely encouraging in terms of the continually growing interest in aerosol science but makes the organisation of such conferences increasingly difficult. The diversity of the field is clearly illustrated by the fact that, including special sessions, there were up to eight parallel sessions at any one time. These were further enhanced by the very large number of posters that, combined with the platform sessions, gave a comprehensive picture of the range of research being carried out world-wide. However, the numbers meant that it was only possible for an individual to cover a small proportion of the subject areas in the course of the conference.

Given the scope of the conference everyone’s highlights will be different but some things did seem to stand out. Perhaps the foremost aspect was illustrated by the opening plenary on “Aerosols from Biomass Burning”. The urgent requirement for the world to reduce reliance on fossil fuels brings with it new potential problems from particulate pollutants and it was encouraging to hear that numerous research groups are devoting effort to both anticipate and address these problems. The closely related field of climate change modelling continues to grow with the increasing awareness that the dynamics of the atmospheric aerosol is a major factor in predicting the progress of climate change.

It is quite rare for aerosol science to figure prominently in the news but the past year was an exception with the ash cloud from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland causing havoc in European airspace. A special session on the efforts of a number groups to monitor the cloud proved to be very popular indeed.

The ash cloud is clearly an exception but otherwise the major focus of measurement and instrument development remains in the nanometre size range with interesting developments in extending the reliable measurement range of instruments to single nanometre sizes. The use of nanoparticles in the construction of micro-engineered surfaces and structures was the subject of an excellent plenary lecture by Professor Mansoo Choi, which illustrated many exciting developments in this area.

The increasing importance of bioaerosols was illustrated with two special sessions on characterisation and field measurement issues. These highlighted the growing awareness of the importance of aerosols in disease transmission and requirement for specialised tools for discrimination and measurement.

The overall picture brought back from the conference was of a field of science and technology that is of growing importance in very diverse areas. These extend from climate modelling to construction of complex micro-engineered surface and from novel forms of power generation to disease transmission. We can only speculate as to what will be new at IAC 2014 in Korea.

Meet the Biral Aerosol Team . . .

Simon Tebb, Aerosol Sales Engineer

stebb@biral.com

Simon Tebb joined the Biral sales team at the beginning of the year as Aerosol Sales Engineer for our aerosol products.

Simon joins us from TSI Instruments and has responsibility for all geographic areas for the Biral product range. Simon graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with an honours degree in Engineering; after an initial period working as a project engineer he moved in to technical sales and now has eleven years experience of selling scientific and industrial instrumentation at the national and international level.

Over the next few months Simon will be out and about demonstrating the new ELPI+, the Aspect and AFS sensors. If you would like to arrange for Simon to visit you please email him.

Simon will also be on the exhibition stand at the forthcoming DDL21 conference in Edinburgh in December. So please introduce yourself to him if you are also attending (see more information about DDL below).

Another event which Simon is attending which may also be of interest to you:

The ASFERA 2011 Conference in Paris, France on 25th and 26th January 2011. ASFERA is the French Aerosol Society. Together with our distributor Intertek (www.intertek-ics.com) we will be exhibiting the Aspect and AFS size, shape and flourescence analysers and the new ASAS+ software at the conference.
