Biral's Mission Statement

'Our aim is to remain an internationally respected supplier and manufacturer of scientific and industrial measuring instruments, with a reputation for commercial and technical expertise, focused on the needs of our customers.'

Biral and METEOROLOGY

Biral is an established supplier of meteorological instruments offering one of the largest ranges of products available. Our scope extends from sensors to measure wind, temperature, precipitation, visibility, solar radiation and other standard parameters to present weather sensors and complete weather stations.

In addition to a long tradition of promoting and selling other manufacturers’ equipment, Biral also designs and manufactures its own equipment, available to suit all needs from basic monitoring to fundamental research.

The Biral HSS Visibility and Present Weather sensors provide outstanding levels of accuracy and performance. The unmatched reliability and durability is reflected in their extensive use in critical applications such as marine navigational aids, roadside fog warning and airport RVR systems. The first sensors to use forward scatter in combination with an infra-red LED light source, the HSS range remains at the forefront of visibility and present weather measurement and are the sensor of choice in extreme environments.

In 2009, Biral launched the SWS range of present weather sensors which are based on the same successful HSS technology but which have been designed for use in RWIS applications, by wind energy producers and for general meteorological data collection.

Wind measurement is a major focus of the Biral meteorological product range. We can provide everything from simple cup and vane systems to sophisticated instruments for micrometeorology or atmospheric boundary layer research. This approach allows Biral to perfectly match the equipment to the application and budget needs of the customer. Working closely with leading ultrasonic anemometer manufacturers Biral has helped to develop both national and international markets. Biral is a major supplier of ultrasonic anemometers with an unmatched knowledge of their use and applications.

Biral and PARTICLE (AEROSOL) ANALYSIS

Biral designs and manufactures a family of devices based on our unique ASAS (Aerosol Size And Shape) technology as well as distributing the Dekati and Met One aerosol analysers and particle counters. The range of applications for these devices is broad but the principal markets are environmental monitoring, source apportionment, pharmaceutical research and development, process control, critical environment monitoring and scientific research.

Utilising our unique ASAS (Aerosol Size And Shape) technology, Biral has designed and is manufacturing the Aspect instrument - this instrument measures the shape of an airborne particle in real time, as well as size and total particle concentration. This instrument is truly unique in that it is the only commercially available aerosol characterisation system that measures particle shape and size. If this is then combined with the Biral AFS (Aerosol Fluorescence Sensor) which measures the fluorescence signature of the aerosol, this complete system is a very powerful particle research and characterization tool.

The Dekati range of Electrical Low Pressure Impactors (ELPI) use impactor technology combined with particle charging to measure particle size distribution over a huge range of 7nm - 10 μm accurately and in real time. The Dekati range has a comprehensive selection of Dekati aerosol dilution and conditioning instruments from simple pre-cut devices to computer controlled automated dilution systems. Please contact us for more information on particle sample conditioning and dilution for high temperature and high concentration measurements.

The Met One Range of handheld particle counters and dust monitors are designed primarily for use in controlled environment applications. They measure mass, number, temperature and humidity measurement over a wide range of particle sizes. Particle counters detect and measure in real time individual particles as small as 0.3 microns in diameter. Dust monitors feature particle mass concentration reporting. Particle profilers take particle counting to the next level adding full user control over the sizing bins while extending the concentration range.

Biral has been involved in the field of aerosol science for over 35 years and is a member of The Aerosol Society.

Biral and BIODETECTION

Biral's unique ASAS Technology is the platform for a family of biosensor products, and has been used for over a decade by the British Armed Forces in battlefield detection systems. These sensors are now being adopted by the Japanese Defence Agency in military vehicle NBC systems and are under evaluation by several European Governments. Biral biosensor products have also been included in civil defence systems.

Biral’s real time detector VeroTect, launched in Autumn 2005, employs next-generation technology which analyses aerosols not only in terms of particle size, shape and concentration, but also fluorescence, to provide real time generic detection. No other commercially available real-time biodetection sensor characterises as many independent physical parameters. As testament to its pedigree, VeroTect was selected as the biosensor for the UK MOD’s Integrated Sensor Management System (ISMS).

To further assist in real time, reliable detection and warning capability, the intelligent VeroWarn software has been developed. This makes use of detection algorithms developed from and tested with real trials data. The system is highly adaptable and can be set up to deliver warnings appropriate to a wide range of detection scenarios.

BIRAL also has a well-established history of developing fully engineered prototype equipment for the UK MOD and other organisations. In the most recent of these the company was selected as the prime contractor to develop a technical demonstrator of the UK MOD’s next generation of biological agent identifying detectors. The Portable Integrated Battlespace Biological Detection Technology (PIBBDT) is a programme to design, build and test a biological detection and agent identification system that has high sensitivity with a very low incidence of false alarms but one that is also portable, adaptable and capable of autonomous operation.

Biral has also collaborated with European partners in an EU internal security project to develop a fluorescence lidar for the stand-off detection of biological agent material. Biral designed and built the lidar receiver optics together with the data acquisition electronics. The integrated system underwent field trials in Sweden, which demonstrated excellent simulant discrimination and spatial resolution of the cloud.

Biral is also a member of CBRN-UK and the Homeland Security Portal.

Biral HISTORY

Biral was founded in 1975 by Alan Cussens who remains the Company Chairman.

During the early years following the company's formation Biral became a leading UK distributor of scientific instrumentation in the fields of aerosol science, meteorology, fluid mechanics, filter testing and environmental monitoring. Our reputation has always centred upon our technical expertise in these specialist areas, particularly meteorology and aerosol science, and our ability to provide customers with turnkey solutions.

PARTICLE ANALYSIS HISTORY

In 1993, an engineering division was formed which led to our first UK Ministry Of Defence (MOD) contract to develop specialist biological threat detection equipment.

In collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire, Biral’s proprietary "ASAS Technology" was developed and commercialised to produce the B1010 system.

The Biral B1010 was the first commercially available instrument capable of simultaneous measurement of aerosol particle size and shape with a throughput of 10000 particles per second.

Since then, other military contracts have followed including a cutting-edge Integrated Biological Detection System (IBDS) project from UK MoD.

Our ASAS Technology attracted such considerable interest within the aerosol research community that the technology was further enhanced for the product release of the Aspect in 1998. With a versatile design and powerful analytical software, the Aspect is a particle size and shape analyser for wider applications within industry and scientific research.

The ASAS Technology was further enhanced with the addition of fluorescence measurement and led to the product release of the Biral Verotect Generic Bio Detection product in 2008.

In 2009, Biral acquired the distribution rights for the Met One range of Handheld Particle Counters and also the Dekati range of Aerosol dilution instrumentation further expanding our Particle Analysis and Measurement range.

METEOROLOGICAL HISTORY

In 1997 Biral acquired the HSS technology for their market leading visibility and present weather sensors. Device manufacture followed shortly, further strengthening Biral’s involvement in the meteorological field.

Biral also has the Thies range of Meteorological instrumentation further adding to our range of capabilities in this field, along with the Thies range, we have the Metek range of Meteorological instrumentation adding MRR and SODAR capabilities to our MET range.

In 2009, Biral launched the SWS range of present weather sensors designed to meet the needs and requirements of the RWIS market as well as Wind Energy producers and general meteorological data collection.
