The Biral Wetted Wall Cyclone

- Highly efficient aerosol sampling system
- Effective collection of small particles

The Biral Wetted Wall Cyclone uses this proven technology to collect aerosol particles from a large volume of air into a small volume of liquid, so enabling direct sample transfer to biological identification or analysis systems.

The Biral Wetted Wall Cyclone (BWWC) can be used in a wide variety of biological detection systems thanks to the automated fluidic system. Where there is a need for constant surveillance and off-line analysis the BWWC can be configured to produce either single or multiple batch samples for predetermined sample times. Where sampling must be initiated as the result of a signal from a trigger device, such as the Biral VeroTect, collection can be started by either the local electrical interface or an Ethernet connection. The BWWC can also be configured to provide a continuous stream of sample where real time analysis is required or for connection to an external fraction collector.

Wetted Wall Cyclones were originally developed as “gentle” samplers for bio-aerosols where
viability was required for subsequent analysis. Whilst viability is not generally a requirement for
modern identification techniques the wetted wall cyclone is still an appropriate collection method which is compatible with all identification technologies.

Ease of use is central to the BWWC design with such features as drip free sample and  consumable replacement, automatic blockage detection and automated cleaning cycles. All routine operations can be conducted by personnel having only limited training and all major fluidic components can be swapped in the field to ensure the highest levels of availability.

KEY FEATURES

  • Higher air to liquid concentration ratios (>106 times concentration)
  • Higher collection efficiency at low particle sizes (1 μm: 49%   and   3.2 μm: 84%)
  • Input for connection to local trigger devices
  • Compatible with all identification technologies
  • Easily integrated with the Biral VeroTect and other equipment and systems
  • Operates autonomously for extended periods
  • More automatic features - automated blockage removal and cleaning cycles
  • Local operator display and controls
  • Remote control and monitoring via Ethernet
  • Rapid and safe access to reservoirs
  • Choice of sampling modes
  • Continuously samples for many hours
  • Operating range -15 degrees C to +50 degrees C
  • Tamper proof design
  • Simple to use and maintain
  • Range of accessories and pre-filled consumables

System design and modes of operation

The collector has an innovative cyclone body design together with a sophisticated fluid handling system that delivers a highly effective and largely autonomous aerosol sampling system. In terms of effective collection the system improves significantly on existing designs by maximising the concentration in the liquid sample and improving the collection efficiency of smaller particles (around 1μm). Extensive chamber tests on the system have confirmed that these design objectives have been fully achieved.

Making the collector user-friendly in a wide variety of sampling scenarios was also a major objective. This has been achieved by offering a range of automated fluidic functions such as block detection and removal, sample volume maintenance, flushing and system cleaning. These functions enable the samplers to operate for long periods with the minimum of operator
attendance. Filled bottles of the consumable liquids are offered to enable systems to be  serviced very rapidly by staff requiring only a minimum level of training.

Modes of Operation

The system is offered with three different modes of operation: batch, multi-batch and continuous. The BWWC in standard configuration supports only Batch Mode.

BATCH MODE

In batch mode a volume of liquid is chosen and this volume is recirculated through the cyclone with the volume maintained from the reservoir to compensate for evaporation. In this mode sampling can be maintained as long as is required, subject only to liquid losses and the volume of the reservoir.

MULTI-BATCH MODE

In multi-batch mode a sampling period is selected and up to five samples over sequential  periods can be collected.

CONTINUOUS MODE

In continuous mode the flow of liquid through the cyclone is continuously delivered to the sample point. The volume of sample can be controlled within the limits required for the efficient operation of the cyclone.
